Aligning IT for the Future: Leading Transformations Through Change

Digital transformation is very different from digital modernization. According to Pramanick (2023) "Digital transformation involves a radical change in the way a business operates, while digital modernization refers to the updating or upgrading of existing technology systems."

In an IT environment, we often lie to ourselves by pretending technology is the only problem. I learned very quickly that people create solutions, people code products, and people can feel very unheard and ignored, which can cause more problems than any technology. When smart people are in a room, but can't express their expertise or can't agree on how to proceed, it's easy to fall behind schedule.

The impact of change management is often misunderstood when it comes to transformations and modernizations. There's more to change management than just thinking about how technology and processes will change. Future-proofing involves understanding how people, processes, and technology will need to evolve to meet needs.

If you're going through transformation or modernization, my advice is to come to work with big pants on. You must have revealing, transparent conversations about people, process, and technology that can't exclude IT participation about business process and supporting technology. IT and business need to attend the workshops and be on board with the results.

Designate a strong leader and facilitator who understands the vision and how to bring people together, as well as managers from each department to support the exercises.
